How to Get a Mexican Passport: Requirements, Appointment and Naturalized Citizens

The Mexican passport is a travel document issued only by the Mexican government to people with Mexican nationality. As an immigration lawyer in Mérida, I get this question mostly from people who have just received their naturalization letter or from children of Mexicans born abroad. Here are the basics.

1. Can a foreign resident get a Mexican passport?

No. Being a temporary or permanent resident does not give you Mexican nationality. To hold a Mexican passport you must first be Mexican, by birth or by naturalization. After naturalizing, your naturalization letter proves your nationality.

2. Requirements for adults applying for the first time

  • Proof of Mexican nationality. If the system cannot verify it, present a Mexican birth certificate, a certificate or declaration of Mexican nationality, or a naturalization letter.
  • A valid official ID in original, such as a voter ID (INE), consular ID or driver’s license.
  • An appointment, mandatory for first-time applications and renewals.
  • Proof of payment of fees, using a payment reference line.

3. How to book the appointment

You book at a passport office in Mexico or at a consulate through the official portal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE). Do not show up without an appointment. Channels and phone numbers change, so use only those listed on gob.mx.

4. Renewal, theft or loss

  • Renewal: previous passport, valid ID and proof of nationality.
  • Theft, loss or destruction: file a report first, then apply as a first-time applicant.

5. Validity and cost

Passports are issued for 1, 3, 6 and 10 years, and the fee is updated every year. The one-year passport is issued only to children under three. Always check the current fee on the official portal before paying.

6. Naturalized Mexican: what about my residency?

Once you naturalize, your resident card stops being your immigration document. If you are close to that step, in a consultation I explain what comes next. My Mexican citizenship guide covers the process.
